As Dr. Smith snaps his fingers, Jake’s eyes snap open, and he takes a deep breath, looking around the room. “Wow, what just happened?” he asks, rubbing his eyes. Nathan chuckles and says, “You were just hypnotized, man! Dr. Smith just put you under!” Jake frowns, trying to remember what they were talking about before he blacked out. “Wait, what was I supposed to forget?”
Dr. Smith grins and says, “Well, Jake, I suggested that you wouldn’t be able to remember your name. Even if someone tells you, you won’t be able to recall it. You’ll also start picking your nose and sucking your thumb whenever you hear certain words, and you won’t be aware of doing it.” He pauses for dramatic effect. “Let’s see if it worked.”
Nathan leans in eagerly, “Come on, Jake! Prove him wrong!” Jake hesitates, feeling a little unsettled, but decides to play along. “Okay, let’s do this.” They all sit down in the living room again, and Dr. Smith clears his throat. “Jake, when you hear the word ‘pick’, you’re going to start picking your nose automatically. You won’t be able to stop until you hear a snap. Understood?” Jake nods slowly, his brow furrowing in concentration.
“And Jake,” Dr. Smith continues, “when you hear the word ‘suck’, you’re going to start sucking your thumb without realizing it. Again, you’ll stop when you hear a snap. Got it?” Jake takes a deep breath and nods once more. Nathan leans back in his chair, a smirk playing at the corner of his mouth.
The three men sit in silence for a moment, the only sound in the room being the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. Then, suddenly, Nathan clears his throat and says, “Pick.” Jake’s hand shoots up to his nose, and he begins to dig around furiously, totally unaware of what he’s doing. After a few seconds, there’s a snap, and he pulls his hand away, looking confused. “What was that about?” he asks.
